AB OBJECTIVE: In this study an attempt is made to standardize a common
methodology in order to formulate a prospective financing health care
system, in Greece. METHODOLOGY: A comparative analysis of Greek studies
on HIV/AIDS patients economic cost components is attempted despite the
differenciations concerning the use of sample, methodology and other
economic and clinical parameters. RESULTS: Various Greek studies present
differences in cost per patient. Estimates of direct cost reveal that
the average annual cost per person ranges from 6,350 pounds to 38,482.
The percentage of average annual AIDS cost per capita compared to the
GDP per capita ranges from 103% to 766%. DISCUSSION-CONCLUSION: A
standardized cost-analysis is needed to improve the comparability and to
promote methods and criteria a priori financing AIDS patients care. In
order to achieve the implementation of a prospective financing mechanism
of AIDS patients the standardization of the used methods as well as the
classification of patients according to severity of illness are mainly
requested.
